Frederic
Hickman's Piano Workshop
has been servicing the greater Baltimore-Washington-Annapolis areas
since 1984. The shop is located in a bucolic setting in Edgewater,
Maryland, just minutes from Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay.
Mr. Hickman became interested in the workings of the piano already
as a child, and by his mid-twenties he had launched into a career
as a piano technician with the successful refurbishing of an
old Estey upright purchased from the Salvation Army. By 1977 he
was working in a small Annapolis piano shop, where, in the course
of his three years there, he gained valuable experience in the
restoration of grand and upright pianos, as well as cabinet repair
and refinishing. At the same time he was continually honing
his ear in the art of tuning, and soon was skilled enough to start
his own piano service and rebuilding business. Since then, the Hickman
Piano Workshop has been specializing in the rebuilding of fine
grand and vertical pianos, as well as the proper tuning and
maintenance of the home and studio instrument.
In 1982, Mr. Hickman joined the Piano Technicians Guild and passed
the rigorous examinations to qualify for Registered Craftsman.
He remains active in the Baltimore Chapter of the PTG, having served
as president and as technical coordinator.
